FERC Staff Issues Draft Environmental Impact Statement on Aguirre Offshore GasPort, LLC's Aguirre Offshore GasPort Project (CP13-193-000)
The proposed Project facilities include the construction and operation of an offshore marine LNG receiving facility (Offshore GasPort) located about 3 miles off the southern coast of Puerto Rico, near the towns of Salinas and Guayama, and a 4.1-mile-long subsea pipeline connecting the Offshore GasPort to the Aguirre Plant. A Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) would be moored at the Offshore GasPort on a semi-permanent basis. Ships would dock at the Offshore GasPort and deliver LNG to the FSRU. Both the ships and the FSRU would be under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard. Comments are due on or before September 29, 2014.

The Commission is establishing this technical conference to explore the impacts of recent cold weather events on electric and gas operations and markets in Regional Transmission Organization/Independent System Operator (RTO/ISO) regions, and discuss actions taken to respond to those impacts. The conference will look broadly across all RTO/ISO regions to inform the Commission of the challenges posed by these cold weather events. Discussion will focus on a number of issues, including: the impact of cold weather events on operational planning and real-time operations, market prices and performance, and regional infrastructure; the actions taken in response to those impacts; and lessons learned that can be shared between regions and applied in future events.

Grand Opening for Project LIBERTY: Nationís First Plant to Use Corn Waste as a Feedstock

POET-DSMís Project LIBERTY in Emmetsburg, Iowa, will celebrate its grand opening September 3, 2014, becoming the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant to use corn waste as a feedstock. Developed through a joint venture between POET LLC in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and DSM Royal, a Dutch enzyme manufacturer, the project uses biochemical conversion technologies (yeast and enzymes) to convert cellulosic biomass into transportation fuels.

The Energy Department announced today $17.6 million for 14 cooperative agreements with small businesses and institutions of higher education to develop and deploy efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation technologies that will help reduce petroleum use in the United States. The funding will go towards projects that pursue breakthrough approaches to providing Americans with greater freedom of mobility and energy security, while lowering costs and reducing impacts on the environment.

Veterans and Others Can Apply for an AMO-sponsored Advanced Manufacturing Internship

Applications are being accepted for the new Advanced Manufacturing Internship program starting today. Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, TN, developed the curriculum for Veterans with funding from the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO). The new course will engage 20 students for three semesters, provide access to 3-D printers, and supplement the classwork with paid internships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and local companies. A ceremony was held today, Friday, August 15th, to recognize the first 24 participants in the pilot internship program.
